What we recognize as hair is actually only the hair shaft, which protrudes above the surface of the skin. The root of the hair lies below the skins surface, in the layer called the dermis, originating in a structure called the hair follicle. While many believe that hair thinning loss is simply a product of not using the right conditioner or poor hair care, chances are the real damage is taking place under the scalp at the follicle or root level and has very little to do with what is happening above the skins surface.
The truth of the matter is that permanent balding in both men and women only occurs if enough follicles shrink, die, or become unable to produce new growth. Sometimes follicles die simply because of the aging process but generally speaking if you are being impacted by a noticeable amount of hair thinning loss or balding there is a very good chance that a condition known as male or female pattern baldness is at the source of your problem.
You may have heard the terms male or female pattern baldness bandied around but may not have paid much attention. In fact most people don’t until one day they look in the mirror and find a head of hair that is thinner are less robust than it has ever been. And let’s face it the moment when the realization hits you that you could be going bald a feeling of disbelief washes over you like a bad dream. Put simply, this moment or realization is no fun. After all, our hair is a big part of who we are and what we stand for.
Hair thinning loss caused by male or female pattern baldness is a progressive condition that has both a genetic component (from either side of the family) and an androgen hormone component (DHT). For those who are genetically predisposed the hormone DHT actually binds to the hair follicle. Over time the buildup of DHT cripples any follicle it comes in contact with ultimately rendering it incapable of producing new hair. Eventually it will wither away and die. If you feel that your hair thinning loss could be caused by male or female baldness you certainly are not alone. It is estimated that as many as six out of ten men will fall victim to the condition and one in four women.
This condition, also know as androgenetic alopecia can sometimes be treated effectively with drugs. Minoxidil (formerly for blood pressure) may be able to revitalize the damaged follicles when applied directly to the scalp on a daily basis. Finasteride also known as Propecia works by blocking the effects of the male hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) on the hair follicle and is taken by mouth daily. Both drugs are widely used but results will only be sustained as long as treatment is continued.
What Next? DHT hair thinning loss will not reverse itself without some form of treatment. Currently there are a handful of hair regrowth products specifically designed to address DHT and hair loss. Not only do they contain FDA approved ingredients which have been shown to block dihydrotestosterone (DHT) but they also work to stimulate the scalp and bring dead follicles back to life. These hair regrowth products can be used as a preventative tool, starting the program before hair loss becomes severe, or you can use them after DHT has already begun to take hold of your hair and scalp.
